Employment opportunities within Media

Employment opportunities within Media

Full time

When you get the chance to work in the media industry you will be placed in many forms of different work contracts the first being a full time worker with a full time media contract more often then not full tine jobs require you to work on a production for a long period of time for a full time paying job the production could go on months at a time but you would be put in that specified area for the allocated time that this production begins and ends. An example for a full time job would be a researcher in which the job entails you to do multiple counts of research as to whats current and what people currently want in popular culture in doing this you develop your own ideas and bring them forth to your team and pitch ideas for this new show or persuade your team to focus on a certain area that has become a popular and there for making this idea into a series. People in this job role would typically have some expirence in the media industry meaning they worked there way from the bottom to this point even to go far back as getting free work as a volunteer but then after mutliple times of being with that company they decided to keep you own as a runner which would later move you up to the point of becoming a researcher, Much higher roles with full times would be Director, producer, editor, vision mixer ect.

These jobs would require massive amount of experience so to get your foot in the door you would need contacts its always good to have contacts as word of mouth is the most trusted source of infomration as if your friend works on a production and needs someone and they suggest you the person in charge would most likely take there word of them and with one right production you can get youself in the company and start building yourself up and get yourself a high paying full time job.
The final way would be to directly contact this comapny maybe pester them to the point they accept your interview giving you a chance to show them how persitant and driven you are.

Part Time

When working in media not all jobs will be full time roles many of these jobs will be part time roles if you find yourself wokring a part time shift one benfit is less hours so less stess but sadly you will have less pay. ruuners are considered to be a part time role as you are really the person below a lot of higher people and you do a lot of errands for those people to keep the production going you do many functions as the runner following multuple areas in the media sector this could be major jobs or small jobs depending on whos incharge of you. For example if you worked on TV and you had a guest your priority would be calm down the guest and talk about why they are on the show almost do a dummy interview with them so before they go on to talk to our host they are a  lot less stressed out and are calmer making it easier for them to talk to our host. The employer would be looking for most likely younger energetic enthusatic people with a massive creative input for the production crew as if they are working there way into this industry they need to act like they want to get involved with this company and its shows. This person would have to massively organised, punctial, able to hit dead lines and have great time keeping this will help the production go at a smooth pace it will also look good to an employer as you are hitting everything they are looking for. They want people with bits of expirnce and passion so keep your CV up to date with a passion about this industry and your skills as well as what you can bring to the table.

Freelance

Freelance is another way of saying self employed for example if you have a keen interest in photography and have the skills to take beauitufl photographs you could later sell these photographs to a magazine and get them to publish these photos in this magazine and you could split the profits they could then later hire you as a free lance photogrpher where they tell you what to take pictures and what for and how much you would get paid but this be assigned strictly to you and you would not get a company contract with this company. In the interest of filming many people take it upon themselves to charge for wedding videos as they shoot it with there own equipment and then edit the final product themselves and sell it to the couple while buying a small licenese to have any music they want on the DVD as its not for commerical useses. The only thing about freelance is you have to set yourself up so have a strong graps on certain skill and have  backing knowledge of what is you do and also provid an e-portfolio to clients.

Shift Work

When having with shift work within the industry this would usually be for a 24 hour broadcaster. This means that someone that will have a job in a television production or in radio broadcasting when recording something that would be continuous throughout the day for instance Radio One with the BBC, someone that would be working by shift would be given shifts for when to work within a production day.Shifts could be split from basic 9 to 5 or even have the grave yard depneding on what you were assigned.

Voluntary

Voluntary work is commonly known as work expirence you are volunteering because you want to learn about the industry you will most likely not be paid by the company as you have no expiernce in any form and there are probably more perepspetive candiates however if you are eager enough and impress them what could happen is shadowing where you are taken under someones wing in a certain area that you impressed and you become a paid apprentice. You are most likely a runner or highest a peronsal assistant to someone most of it would be doing small job no wants to do but its a great way to get in the door.

Piece work

Piece work is a contract where someone pays you for a proudct or in this case piece to be made for a specfic area however you will not get paid until this piece is done a lot of compaines do this with out side graphics deisgerns for banners and 3D modelling even editors get a chance to create a piece for a production as the main company may have deadlines to meet with other shows they out source there content to other companies or clients so they can keep on track but as i said you would not be paid until this piece is finished. Many comapines who are dry on ideas could even ask you to make a whole new show for them and even pitch towards a company for them as you are writing an oringal piece for there company and could get comissoned which if this happend could get you into a higher rank of employment if you idea is good enough you could also get a heavy part of the profit if the piece sells well.

Preparing and applying

Prepraing for the media industry is such a long task and with technology progessing as it is new exciting jobs come out every year but with the overwhelming amount of change in the industry you must be sure what you would want to do in your future as the qulafications you get can help push you in that right direction. For example if you wanted to become a great writer for making movies you would most likely have to go into a univertisy and study either script writing or film production this would take three for a basic degree or five for a masters over the time you are there you would have developed your skills and found your strenghts and in many cases worked on some of your own productions in departments you want to work in. All the qualfications you gain over the years in university should be noted down on a CV. Your CV is your life blood for job interviews it has to sell you as a person it shows your educational milestones in life as well as your previous job expirences and a small part about your interest the whole point of this document is to make you look appealing to the person who is holding the job so you must make it count you have to seem eager and passionate at the job interview prepare yourself know what you are going to say think of questions to ask talk about your passion and what you hope to achieve and what you can bring that no one else can. FInally have regrences about your previous job employers and show them to your interview the words they say can help you come across more of an employable person even use old jobs as refrence points when questions are asked even turn a weakness into a strenght but dont see over confident. One final thing is do your home work if the employee works at Sony pictures research the company talk about its greatst movies its casts and clients its history seem eager to want to work for that company and attend the interview on time be punctional and finally dress to impress.

Understand the structure and Ownership of the media sector

In this post i will be talking about the two forms of media based ownership using two different companies and how there ownership capabilities are different from one another one being publicly owned and the other being owned by private sectors and investors at the television company.

Back in the 20th centuries around the 50s television became a new invention for all the family to enjoy though starting out slow with the prices being so high TV quickly evolved into a massive world wide fandom now as we have entered the 21st century we see that 98% of the population in Britain alone own a TV this shows that this is the right market to be in but what companies own the rights to broadcast to our audiences and who runs them to go into detail i will be looking at BBC a public owned TV station and SKY a private based TV station and will be explaining the differences and how there broadcasts are processed to us as an audience.

First we will look at the BBC a publicly owned company which is funded by our very own government we pay for it to air its shows and news as we pay a TV licensee in order to view there vast amount of entertainment programs. As we the public are the main source of income with our TV licensees we are the people to impress in a way we are like investors in the company as they want to impress us enough so we pay to keep there company a float this also counts along side there other two main platforms radio and internet streaming. It also goes by ratings if a show for example gets much less views then other shows those shows will be immediately dismissed as we are the source of funding and they want to keep us entertained so if we don't put money into the BBC because there shows are bad they will lose money which can hurt the company that's way main shows that have stayed on air so long have delivered to us each week so in turn we still pay our money towards the company.Another thing to mention is that in BBC shows there are no add breaks this is because with it being publicly funded they have no backers or third party companies funding them to show there products or services this pleases a lot of audience as they can get to the next show with no hassle this is a good business technique to adopt.

With the audience who views the BBC the audience has there input what i mean is that they can say what they like about this show or what they dont like and with so many people watching they are able to appeal to a massive range of different people which with this data they are able to adapt shows to that of the audiences tastes so this then makes better shows for us an audience as this is strictly programs made for the people and its what the people want and they can help push what they want to the BBC through multiple means. With the shows being made for the people this then makes it grow more of audience appeal as a different range of audiences of age groups and backgrounds can view the shows they want to watch as it is specific targeted at them and suits there needs as consumers.

The BBC then has high reputation in delivering what the people want however if they did not base this on what the people want to see then programs would simply be broadcast to no ones pleasure and it would surely fail as it is not aimed at people who want this rather your telling the people what they want to watch..

However being a public owned company is not always the best option as with other companies that have different TV linces like "Sky" and  "Virgin" these companies have deals with a range of different companies which have there own shows they want to broadcast with to the public and with these broadcasting comapines having the rights to show there programs through there own streaming and television station we as the public are allowed more channels to watch with more content from a massive range of different broadcasting stations. However In the BBC's case we pay for only BBC certified channels so we get only a few channels and wont be able to get contracts with much bigger shows that are broadcasted on other channels. The BBC only has rights to the content that they make as they only own there side of programming anything outside of the BBC will not be broadcasted unless BBC help produce that picture even then it will be broadcasted on BBC channels as soon as it comes available to them they will take rights so show movies on the channel but that is to do with the popular culture and it gives them ability to fill a time slot so they have paid for the rights to show that movie on there channel. With the BBC owning everything themselves this makes them a media conglomerate.

The BBC uses cross media in many different ways of advertising and other methods for example if a an event at the BBC is taken place such as a music festival they will show this ad on TV,newspapers and the internet but this would only be shown in the sectors which they own and they intern can distribute the event them selves as they have the ability to put the message across the formats they own this makes them a vertical integrate company this is because they produce the event, make the event and advertise the event with there own resources allowing them to use there own money and gain all the profit back.

The BBC has a massive diverse range of shows broadcasting from early in the morning to very late at night for example mid day you would be treated so such programs as "Pointless" a small quiz show based around common knowledge where as later in the day when most people are returning home from work spending time with loved once eating dinner they would put a more dramatic shocking tale on such as "Sherlock" this shows a great diversity in the shows that BBC has to offer to its audience it is also all about the timing that these programs are on at the right time for the right consumers.

However with much bigger companies i say bigger to to the amount of contracts they have with television stations and the vast amount of programs they offer it is hard for the BBC to compete with them. "Sky" has the ability to show TV shows owned by multiple broadcast companies some European  a bunch of them which are american and with them offering services such as Catch Up TV people are able to record pause and fast forward the TV shows and movies they want to watch it even offers suggestions on what else you may like.

The oppistie to a public owned company is a private based one my biggest example would be Sky a company funded by the advertisements that it shows while programs are on breaks by doing this the company is more focused on keeping its investors happy as they play there advertisements for the products they either sell or a company that  has a partnership to show that product these comapines are more focused on keeping those who fund them with money through advertisement and not that of the public. Private owned broadcast comapines seem to have much wider range of channels and interest there for allowing the viewers to watch more content and therefore making the companies more profit, Also with the range of shows you find that each private owned comapny has its on specific set of a target audience, For example Kerrang TV is focused more on teenagers who then go into young adults playing a specfic range of rock, metal and punk music where as programs like Discovery Channel would appeal to a much wiser and older generation who have a passion for education and things that are more intellectual. The BBC being public based tries to appease all different kinds of audiences as the shows are made for the public to watch at there disposal and they try to spread the shows out for different audiences so they can please all.

Sky is a media Conglomerate as one section of sky is owned by 20th Century Fox which is one of the biggest if not the biggest broadcasting companies of all time having over 10 million subscribers to this company alone in the UK this is a company that knows that people want to see. Sky has merged with other companies as the point of doing this is that with them merging and having this partnership all of them get profit therefore they all get a benefit by merging together. News corporation is one of the biggest comapines that owns multiple comapines within its own group what i mean by this that with the multiple merges it has it is able to stretch out its message and broadcasts to pretty much every where and it is all owned by one man known as Rupert Murdoch most if not all profit go towards this man and with its multitude of different channles that branch out from this one company it raises the reputation of that company so much higher as it has so many internal comapines within side one giant company all benefiting from being in this group. Sky often advertises on other channels its not merged with but has contracts with as they have a higher view audience but Sky has much more revenue so they are able to distrubute there product to another company drawing them in to watch there program on one of there channels getting them more views and making thhem more money they often do this with sport as that is one of Skys biggest attractions.

A big advantage to being privately own is that the funds strictly go off the advertising funds that the channels get one programs are on for example if a popular show on Sky one is playing such as "24" the massive amounts of audinces watching that show will give the that specific channel more profit and while this show is on its break the advertisement is playing this gains that channel more profit so the comapny will contiously pay for that slot for that advetisment to be played giving Sky more moeny which can allow Sky to get the rights to new shows or even a new merger and the cycle reaptes itslef again and again allowing the company to grow and expand its varity of shows and partnerships with other comapnies and TV shows.

However the problem with being a privately owned company is that you arent making programs that people want to see or if they do want to watch them its a fifty-fifty chance of being a suceess or a flop where as publcily owned compaines put a lot of time and effort into researching what people want to see and if the show should be funeded other comapines however just find a slot for the show and air a pilot to see how it goes many times in the past it has been a sucessful and a flop but that result of its first episode can have the chance of either loosing profit or gaining it. The whole process is a coin toss in many cases. Sky has a lot of power in its market what i mean by this is that with its overwhleming popularity many partnerships are fighting for the right slots on adverising times and wanting to put forward there best products to put on display for the audience to see which gives Sky much more money to exapnd upon there company as well and with it not being owned by the Goverment they are at there own disposal to show what they want to show on there broadcast making them a horizontally integrated company.

In broadcasting terms we have two different types of comapines horizontal and vertical integrated comapines horizontal has a lot of strategy around the plans that this company has to exapnd into different areas but upon the same similar level that it is placed so if a show its bought or made an example would be to exapand the show through out multiple platforms so maybe taking up a partnership with a streaming company like "Netflix" so it could gain some popularity as this services popularity could help increase the shows profit therefore mutaully beenfit the content creator and the streaming service.

"We have a well-established and comprehensive approach to engaging with our stakeholders. We seek views from our stakeholders to help us shape our individual initiatives as well as our overall approach. This includes customers, our people, policy makers, experts from our industry, the sustainability sector and non-government organisations. We use this feedback to help us meet our stakeholder expectations in evolving our strategy, initiatives and reporting." This is a statement on Sky's website, this implies how the company use Stakeholders to share intellectual knowledge to better their products.

This is an example of cross convergence as we have one company using the paper to adveriste there company in the news papers therefore both companies working together to get a final finished by working together.

A massive company such as Sky really dont have much to fear as if they keep pushing the good TV shows and have the investors pushing there products through Skys advertisements funding they are pretty much able to keep exapnding as there revenue comes from that source, However a public based company like BBC fouses on the audeinces needs so they much threats off sky as they gain revuneue and a higher audeicne through the multiple channels that they own so they dont have much threat as they both have revenue coming in from backers as well as the public where as the BBC depends on the interests that the audiece has to the BBCs content.

Reflection (Multicam ProductIon)

In this post i will be reflecting on a multi cam production i did on June 10th 2015 at 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM.

This production was for a musical performed by students the musical they were performing was the classic musical Hairspray.

When making this production we used four cameras,a talk back system, vision mixer hooked up to both five monitors which were all cabled to each camera which was a signed a letter corresponding to that number for example one being letter A and three being letter C.

The production was just over two hours long due to a fifth teen minute interlude half way through the show.

We first watched the earliest performance while were setting up just to get an initial of idea of where the four cameras should be placed also to know the pace of the musical and at what moments we were able get the right shots for the show. Once the show was finished and our set up was prepared we waited an hour before the next performance.

The next performance started with a the screen starting black and then as the music began to rise the audio of the vision mixer and the fade in synced together to allow the music and the visuals to fade in at the same time.

The cameras were set up so we had four different shots we had camera one on the far side the second in the centre the third further to the right and the fourth on the far right the first shot focused on the centre of the main character with the music playing we switched between the furthest cameras apart to go with the pace of the music. Then when the pace of the music became more up beat and more characters were shown we then had a wide shot of all the extra cast dancing and perfuming this first opening scene of the main character.

The next scene focused on the two main characters having a conversation running hone to watch a show with the cameras set up we focused mainly on the characters using the main centre cameras to focus on them while getting some of our performers in the background. The shots then changed and followed what was going on in the story it switched from the live TV show of the dancing performers and the cameras tracked the host giving both mid shots and close ups of the TV shows faced whilst cutting back to our main characters on the fair right in there small set of a family home it switched back and forth from cameras four and one to establish what was going on following the pace of the story and the dialogue that was being said and sang by our characters.

Shortly after this part with the TV show we go back to the characters dialogue in there home using the furtherest camera on the opposite side of the stage to get the best shot while camera four zooms in on the action while allowing the other cameras to set up for the next mid shot for the next bigger performance the closest camera to the action was also focused on the story just so we could switch angles mid way between the conversation.

Once this scene has finished we then go back to the open shot which the centre cameras would focus on all the cast while using the other cameras to zoom in on our main cast once again while background performers fill up the shot we used the middle cameras to track are main cast so were able to follow them along with what was going on in our story and dialogue of the mishap in this scene when are main character is turned down by the evil character. So with this progression in the story we then follow the character being thrown into school so with a quick set change we focused our cameras on the main part of the stage so we could establish the scene.

Next with there only being a small group of characters we were able to track the characters having a conversation and dancing using the multiple cameras to get different points of view of the scene to establish who was speaking to who we were cutting from shot to shot to follow the pace of the dialogue  of what was going on in our scene.

Again we our back to the wide shot of our performers on our TV show so we needed more depth in our shot to allow as much cast in the shot as possible while our centre cameras focused more on the main characters establishing conversation while cutting back and forth between them and our sub-cast in the background and with such a large group of cast it help add to the realism of the scene.

After this next part the scene starts to slow down and focuses more on the love story that goes on between the main characters of this story and with it being a slow song focusing more on just two of our characters the cameras can track the characters movements which the furthest cameras did and the centres cameras focused more on there facial expression which we can illustrate to them through these shots at the moment they kiss our middle camera zoomed in on them to close of this final scene.

We then later cut back to the set for our main characters in there homes using camera four as this is the furthest away from the scene as this gave chance to the centre cameras to set up for our next main dance part of this story.

With our next shot we have another wide shot of all the cast confronting one another but in this shot we have a continuos light flash of which allowed our cameras to get some great shots of our cast of characters and with a rivalry going on it is a heavy dialogue based scene so using centre camera two to zoom in on the confrontation that is going on between the main good character and the main bad character was more focused upon before and after the confrontation.

We are then left with the two lovers and best friends of these two lovers to using one set of cameras for the main characters and the sub characters we were able to use the cameras to switch between the conversation that the characters were having with each other and using cut shots from person to person it allowed our audience to follow on what was being said between our characters which helped push the plot.

Our next scene shows our characters meeting another cast of unique characters which then brook into this very inspirational moment so the cameras were mainly focused on our new character as they have a big performance so the other characters were mainly shadowed in the background of this performance and with our singer being stood dead centre of the stage this allowed us to get multiple angles of our singer using the furthest cameras one and four then switching back to three to get a centre shot of our main singer.

After this song we see them devise a plan to take on  the evil corporation so using the centre cameras to once again follow dialogue we then switch to a wide shot of all the cast confronting each other so in this scene we used our cameras to track the dialogue but following the pacing of characters dialogue using the cameras to get perspectives of each characters side and switching at the right times following along the conversation as its happening.

We then had a fifteen minute interlude.

Next we have all the main characters in a jail so this was a good chance to get shots of each of the characters as many of them were dead centred in the stage however using the camera to pan from left to right were able to follow along the jail bars of the set to show all the characters at once while switching to shots of the characters that were the main focus of the plot once this song had ended we were left with just the main character in cell by herself so with her being on her own this once a chance to use all our cameras to there full advantage using cameras four , one and two we were able to track the movements of our character and with the help of the lighting we were able get the shots that made the light hit her perfectly.

The next scene split between or main lovers and the sub lovers of the story to with the set being split in half to establish two scenes we thought this would be appropriate to do so with the cameras as well using cameras one and three and cameras two and four we were able to follow the pace of the love story which was going on between both sets of couples.

The second to last scene focused on the good side plotting once again against our evil corporation so this focused on our main characters conversing with one another so with much dialogue going on between multiple sets of characters it was hard to pin point where to put the cameras so a strategy was to place the cameras at sections of the stage but still having camera three in the centre of the stage so in doing this we were able to cut back between those who were talking and those who wasn't allowing our director to tell us where to point to next and who to follow this worked well as our team was able to follow the conversations going on in this one scene between multiple sets of characters.

Finally we are at our final scene this was a big one to do as every character, good, evil and sub generic perfumer was on screen at once so going back to our initial plot we used cameras one, four and two to track the dialogue happening between our evil character and good character while also following the convoluted plan that they had previously discussed last scene we used the cameras to follow the action and it progress from quite into absolute mayhem following the controversy between good and evil to follow the plot as it progress along with the story. After the dialogue was over they had there final happy ending big final number so we quickly zoomed out the shot to fit as many people in frame as we could so we could all cast in shot. While panning with cameras four and one to do a slow sweeping shot of all performers to get that idea of togetherness as they all took a final bow and the clapping slowly stop we then slowly faded the the audio and the visual into black which we did at the start and so we did at the end to give it that final end shot.

Mutlicam- music fest (Ed sheeran)

In this post i will be looking at how and why multi cam is used in the form of a music festival.

Music festival are heavily populated places with many popular acts from all kinds of genres playing together for a whole weekend in some cases like this one. Glastonbury is one of the biggest music festivals every with thousands of people going each year to see the acts so what better chance to catch the acts then to film there live performances.

As you can see below there is a diagram of the camera placement of the music festival and below that is many screen shots of each of these shots.

As you can see above the cameras are placed all over the place this is because of the sheer amount of space in the area of the music festival with the amount of space allows for multiple cameras to be used for the shows.
This first shot above is a mid shot of the singer getting into the music this shot is used to show the act performing up close and to show the energy and determination on his face it also shows the audience who is performing luckily in this case it is only a solo artist with no back up or singers just him so they don't need to go any further out as there primary focus.
The point of this long shot is to show the viewers the amount of people and the distance between the stage and the people this helps create a sense of atmosphere without even being there much like sports multi-cam they use a camera at a distance to create that sense of atmosphere to envelop  the audience in that idea of atmosphere. This is to also to allow the other cameras to get in position for there next shot on stage.
This is the same shot but with a quick graphic to show the audience who is playing and what song is about to be played this is all about timing.
This reverse shot is to illursrate to the audience the distance between the stage and the crowd also how far the crowd can stretch. It also creates that sense of atmosphere again it is beautifully shot so we get that shot of the one artist performing his song in front of all those people it creates that idea of one man against an army so to speak it helps grip us in the environment and allows the cameras to quickly change position.
This close up shot of the foot of are artist is mainly for detail it is mainly to show his movement and what he is doing on stage its a little detail for the audience to enjoying also allowing the audience to see his process when performing the song its an attention to detail shot.
This shot of the audience is created to show the enjoyment on the faces of his fans it creates more feeling to the song and grips our audience even more as it slowly zooms out to allow others to get in the shot. Its primary focuses is the women on the shoulders of another person this is to primary been seen on camera having a good time this helps the audience feel like they were there. Many sports games do this as well when a goal has been scored it is to show emotion of our audience and helps push that emotion to our viewers as well.

This shot is beautiful and its function is simple the shot is created so you feel like your stud in the crowd of these people seeing the stage with our audience it makes you feel as if you were at the concert it is a perfect point of view of shot for the audience viewing this on TV it helps you stand in the shoes of the crowd not used in other multi-cam formats it helps create that sense of realism.
This close up shot is designed to catch the emotion of out performer helping us see how much effort he is putting into his performance it helps deliver that extra punch to the song which makes the audience feel more immersed in the action you can even see the sweat on his face and the redness on his checks these little details help create more atmosphere and helps the audience get more into the song as much as our artist is.
This long shot is beautifully framed as we get one side of the stage the audience and the scenery of Glastonbury this shot is mainly designed to created a distanced point of view shot showing the stretch of fans that go off into the distance of Glastonbury it again creates that sense of realism and wanting to be at the performance it gives it that little sense of as freedom as well with the beautifully sky and hills in the background.
This mid shot is a sort of behind the scenes shot of our performer showing our  audience the whole stage immersing you in the action of our performer once again it shows just him and no one else all this space  helps create that immersed feeling of wanting to be on stage with hims and perform and as i also said it helps create a behind the scenes of whats going on what space he has to perform all of his song to his fans.

This one final shot much like the last one is a shot of behind the scenes of our performers area this shows him walking away illustrating to our audience that this is the final performance of this show and that he is walking away from his stage which helps creates that audience feel that sense of final act and the end of a performance much like TV shows and act who perfumes there talent on there would get a final shot of them walking off stage its to tell the audience that it is finished.
