Multi cam -Sport

In this post i will be looking at a how a multi cam production works inside a specific genre of TV program for this post i will be focusing on a sports cast.

Why do sports shows need multi cam?

Sports shows need multi-cam for many reasons the most obvious is to show close ups of the action happening in the game the is being played it is to illustrate the gameplay for the audience to see the main camera tracks where the ball is going but once a goal is scored it has many different shots in slow motion of the goal being scored as well as the reaction of the audience this helps create atmosphere of the event and helps push that across to the audience which in turn makes the audience more enveloped and part of the action. Also with over lapping commentary from the announcers who help create the tension as they themselves make the game seem more like war as they add many metaphors for the game.

Below is a diagram of the camera placement of the football pitch as well as the studio.

As you can see by the placement of the cameras from the pitch to the studio the number of cameras is dramatically different this is due to the difference as the studio has limited space inside where as on locations like the stadium of the football ground there is much more space for multiple cameras to be placed. As you can see by the stadium diagram cameras are place at all points at the stadium most in the stands but also others at the bottom or pitch side with one camera  being excluded this being the spider cam. However three cameras are simply used for the studio set up this is to get angles of all the talent in the session. To explain this i have screen shoots of where the cameras has been aimed to and what at.
In this shot we have one of our speakers addressing the other speakers of the group we can see this by the camera from the camera shot as it has him in frame but the direction is facing they have created talking space for the shot as this can illustrate another member of the presenters being sat in the direction he is facing. You can also see the graphic of the company and the name of the person and profession this is to illustrate to the audience who this person is and why he is relevant to this show also giving the information about the game the group are discussing. With a dark blue backdrop to represent the company as well with it being one of there main colours of there franchise.
In this mid shot we get all of the group in frame this is makes for open discussion among the group and illustrates to the audience the amount of people who are there but as i have noticed in many shows the camera switches from person to person as the camera focuses on who is talking as they are driving the conversation so the audience needs to see this so the audience can keep to pace with the conversation they are having.

As we can see in this shot we can see two of the group talking to the lead presenter this is to illustrate to the audience that they have either been both asked a question so they are reflecting on this and looking at him this can be seen by the point the view seen on this shot.
In this shot we have one stationary camera following the action as it is happening on screen the camera follows the ball by panning at the appropriate speed to follow the ball this can be either slow or fast depending on distance travelled by the speed of the ball this is a stationary position until something in the game happens that requires the camera to be position to be changed again.
This shots primary design is to allow the audience to get a point of view shot of the goal being scored to illustrate this the camera has been positioned behind the net so you can see the goal being scored accurately. The shot is well placed because it allows the audience to see the goal being scored from another angle.
This shot is a mid shot of the players taking a free kick this could be set by a stationary camera on the side on the pitch but with the invention of the spider camera we are able to move the camera all around the pitch and be able to catch all the action from allowing the camera to move up and down the pitch while also allowing us to move the camera closer to the players this camera is suspended on four strong whires and is controlled by two camera operators with multiple remote controls.
